Barb data suggests that PVRs pose less threat to advertising
MediaCom View: Research by BARB has indicated that only 15-20% of viewing is time-shifted in PVR homes, which is much lower than previous estimates of 40%. These figures are apparently set to be confirmed by Sky who is currently running another research project called Skyview which has even indicated that PVR homes actually increase the amount of television they watch.
ITV and BBC put main channels online
MediaCom View: As part of a six-month trial both the BBC and ITV have teamed up to offer their main channels over a multi-cast pilot. The broadcasters feed their content to the selected ISPs who in turn redistribute them to subscribers and this method also means the load is shared by the ISPs.
Regional papers see further slump in paid-for evenings
MediaCom View: This is no surprise to us that regional circulations have continued to decline. With the growth of other media and migration to regional websites, the regional newspaper market has to work harder to reinvigorate their products and create new platforms to encourage younger readers. As we all know, a single media approach is very rarely the answer.
Internet use outstrips TV viewing for the first time
MediaCom View : Online is truly a mass medium. Individual online media owners now command audiences larger than some of the biggest traditional media owners in the UK. Yahoo alone has 12 million individual users per month. The increase in broadband, rich content and video means that for many the internet is a viable alternative to TV.
